Information for Bands and Musicians
Honk! Oz is a free, family friendly grassroots, community event made possible by the support of local residents and businesses. Bands are not paid, and the organizing committee is volunteer-run.
Honk Oz is primarily a wind, brass, percussion kind of thing. The emphasis is on traditional and alternative street band music . . . think New Orleans, Samba, Gypsy Brass, etc.
A sense of fun, community, and a willingness to participate are most important. Bands interested in being part of the Honk Oz 2016 lineup should contact us to find out more.
Accommodation:
While invited bands are not paid an artists fee, we will do our best to make sure you have a good time while you are here. Invited bands will be provided with accommodation for the 2 nights of the festival weekend. Once you have received your official invitation to Honk! Oz, please provide as much detail as possible about your needs in regards to accommodation.
Travel:
We understand travel will be a major expense for some groups. We are aiming to collect funds and hold a Honk! benefit concert to raise funds for bands coming to the festival from farther afield. There is no guarantee on the outcome of this - it might be best not to factor this into your budget.
Artist Fees:
Honk Oz is not a paid gig - there are no artists fees.
Venues:
Bands will play on the streets and in venues around the Wollongong Arts precinct and CBD mall. Each band will be scheduled for several performances across the weekend, with further opportunities for collaboration and jamming with other attending musicians.
There will be two street parades. Friday Evening Lantern Parade and Saturday Street parade through Wollongong CBD.
Sessions / Workshops:
Musicians attending the festival are welcome to participate in pre-festival workshops and informal jamming. Linsey Pollack will be attending the festival and presenting workshops. We welcome other workshop ideas from visiting bands; arts projects, instrument building, forming and running a community street band etc
Illawarra Folk Festival (January 14-17):
Honk Oz is a fringe event of the Illawarra Folk Festival - Australia's largest volunteer run festival. After Honk!, why not stay on for folk school and the Illawarra Folk Festival. Applications for IFF have now closed, but you will find many Honk friends at the folk festival and more opportunities for jamming and participation in the festival finale parade.
